There are many positions in the American Healthcare industry that do not require a clinical education.  Hospitals and Healthcare facilities are always in need of dedicated workers with experience in other job positions required to make a facility run well.  If you have a background or experience in these positions, please click on the appropriate section for more information.

Registration / Patient Intake / Patient Service Coordinator

Usually these are some of the first people you’ll meet when admitted to a hospital. They work with patients to ensure insurance information and authorizations are up-to-date and will make sure a patient is sent to the correct doctor or specialist.

  • May help in assigning patients to beds
  • Carry out procedures to admit, transfer and discharge patients

Environmental Services

Hospital housekeepers are responsible for sustaining a safe and clean environment in all areas of the hospital by cleaning rooms, making beds, replenishing linens and maintaining floors. 

Food & Nutrition

  • These staff members don’t just deliver food to patients!
  • They make sure patients receive healthy meals,  mindful of dietary restrictions, allergies and special concerns
  • Clinical dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy for patients

Hospital Social Workers

  • These professionals go by different names in different hospitals:
    • Discharge Planner
    • Case Manager
    • Care Manager
  • They start planning for a patient’s discharge early in a patient’s stay
  • They help patients and their families navigate the process of illness and injury, from hospitalization to recovery

Maintenance and Plant Operations

These professionals work to keep an eye on overall maintenance of a medical facility and its medical machines. Routine duties include providing support for construction, renovation and routine maintenance as well as:

  • Maintaining physical structures in the building
  • Maintaining HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems
  • Maintaining utilities systems
  • Maintaining the grounds of the facility so it’s in a safe and operative working condition

Health Information Management

  • These professionals were formally referred to as Medical Records personnel
  • This department maintains patient health information, both digitally and on paper
  • Coordinates records for patients when patients are transferred to different facilities
